Characterising molecules

Coordination compounds

No items found.

In this resource, students explore coordination compounds, identifying ligands and geometry of the compounds. They then move on to explore these in the synthesis of three different coordination compounds and identify the ligand relationships they each have.

Learning outcomes

  • Identify whether a ligand is monodentate or bidentate and predict the geometry of a coordination compound.
  • Calculate the theoretical yield of a synthesised coordination compound.
  • Outline the reaction conditions that are needed for most organometallic coordination compounds.
  • Identify the structures of coordination compounds from reaction descriptions and how many electrons each ligand donates.
  • Analyse the IR spectra of different coordination compounds.

"The great thing about Smart Worksheets is that they tell you at every point whether you’ve got it right or wrong, what might be wrong and how you might go about changing it. The students found that really valuable. In their exam, we found that the average mark in the maths questions rose from 59% to 79%, which made a really big difference to the student outcome.”
