Upgraded Videos and Guides: enhancing chemistry practical preparation for a comprehensive learning experience

//
May 14, 2024

Hands-on laboratory experiences are a core element of university chemistry education, creating important opportunities to engage students and build confidence during their practical sessions. To optimise student learning within these labs, it is crucial to address anxiety, enhance preparedness and bridge knowledge gaps among students with diverse backgrounds.

That’s why our team has revitalised our suite of Technique Videos and Content Guides, making them more accessible, visually stimulating and focused on the key knowledge students need to succeed in practical chemistry. These enhanced resources, alongside the chemistry LabSims, allow you to offer a dynamic, digital environment of resources for student success.

Three tablets displaying different a Guide, LabSim and Video related to enthalpy change. The left tablet shows a guide on enthalpy change calculations The right tablet shows a video tutorial on using a calorimeter to measure the enthalpy change of combustion. The middle tablet displays an interactive simulation setup for measuring enthalpy change, including options for adjusting the mass of the container, volume of water, container material, lid presence, and heating time.

Upgrading your digital chemistry toolkit

Our recent upgrades to the Videos and Guides have been implemented to ensure the content is accessible, engaging and informative.

Enhanced accessibility

Our team has worked diligently to ensure an accessible experience for all students. The upgraded Guides comply with the latest accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2 AA), ensuring everyone can access and benefit from the content.

Modern, responsive design

A fresh, new look has been given to the Videos and Guides to ensure they are visually appealing, while responsive screen sizing means your students can access them on their mobiles, tablets and desktop devices.

Improved mathematical content display

Our improved Guides benefit from a vastly upgraded approach to displaying mathematical content using MathJax and MathML, providing an improved experience with assistive technologies as well as a host of optional accessibility features.

The full set of upgraded Guides and Videos will be available to use with students this Autumn.

Creating a digital learning environment for impactful practical preparation

The Chemistry LabSims Library covers a diverse spectrum of topics in general, analytical and synthetic chemistry. With your subscription, you can build effective and engaging learning experiences that supplement your practical courses. The Videos and Guides, alongside the LabSims, all support students to understand practical and experimental procedures, ensuring they feel confident and prepared for their hands-on lab sessions.

Technique Videos and Content Guides

As part of the Chemistry LabSims Library subscription, we offer free access to over 30 instructional Videos and 50 scientific Guides, created specifically for practical chemistry instruction. These recently updated Videos and Guides are optimised for accessibility and ease of use across devices, and break down techniques and processes into easily digestible formats.

Technique Videos offer a step-by-step visual of procedures, highlighting the essential points students need to know for experimental success. Videos can be used alongside LabSims, bridging the gap between theory and real world practice.

A laptop displayed a Graduated Cylinder video. he video shows a person pouring a blue liquid from a reagent bottle into a beaker, with subtitles explaining the steps. To the left of the video, there are steps listed: "1. Pour the reagent into a beaker," "2. Measure out the required amount of reagent," and "3. Transfer the reagent." Below the video are key points highlighted with different colors for warnings and tips.

The Guides act as succinct resources, providing focused information to enable students to successfully develop their subject knowledge. They offer targeted, comprehensive overviews of experimental procedures, safety protocols and calculations, facilitating students' understanding of how their experimental data relates to the underlying science.

The laptop screen shows Step 1 of a reaction process, illustrating the chemical formulas of reactants and products with molecular diagrams and an equation. The tablet screen shows a page on infrared spectroscopy, highlighting carbonyl group stretches with a spectrum graph and detailed information.
Content Guides support students by providing engaging, focused information on chemical topics, procedures and techniques.

Interactive lab simulations

LabSims are engaging, targeted simulations designed to complement in-person lab work, empowering students to explore complex concepts and practise practical techniques in a safe, virtual environment.

The middle tablet displays a Schlenk Line setup with detailed instructions and labeled components like the vacuum pump, dewar with vacuum trap, and oil bubbler. The right tablet shows instructions for adding a product and solvent in a lab simulation.

With LabSims, students can engage in unfamiliar and new techniques without the constraints and risks associated with a physical laboratory. They can manipulate virtual apparatus with remarkable precision, follow detailed procedures step-by-step, and observe realistic consequences and outcomes in real-time. This dynamic and interactive approach to learning not only captures students' attention, but also fosters a deeper understanding of key chemical processes, empowering them to experiment and make mistakes without repercussions.

Enhancing experiences with LabSims, Videos and Guides

These solutions, included as part of your Chemistry LabSims Library, offer a broad spectrum of resources for various chemistry topics, which can be used across courses to enhance practical experiences.

Accessible pre-lab materials

Engaging pre-lab activities establish a solid foundation for students, ensuring they are well-prepared entering the lab. With your Library subscription, you can create pre-lab experiences that offer students a safe environment to familiarise themselves with procedures and equipment, and practise them at their own pace, reducing lab-related anxiety.

Three tablets displaying a Guide, Video and LabSim on titrations. The left tablet shows a guide for a titration calculation. The middle tablet shows a video of a titration setup with instructions and key points. The right tablet shows a LabSim where users can adjust the setup of a burette.
Guides, Videos and LabSims can support preparation for practical chemistry topics, as individual resources or combined to make an engaging pre-lab experience.

Videos, Guides and LabSims can be combined into one pre-lab activity using LabSim Assessments, allowing you to assign a completion mark to the activity so you can track engagement and progress.

Practice for practical examinations

These resources can be implemented to support ongoing revision and practice. Students can use each of the solutions to revisit experiments, test their understanding of procedures and solidify their grasp of key concepts. This flexibility allows them to practise and perfect their technique outside of pressured lab environments, ultimately boosting their confidence and exam preparedness.

Supporting transitions in postgraduate studies

The LabSims Library isn't just for early-year students. Postgraduates can use the resources to refresh techniques or familiarise themselves with procedures they may not have encountered recently, especially when coming from a different undergraduate background.
